Andy Murray played 'big part' in creating his Wimbledon statue amid 'concerns' it could be botched
Andy Murray has played an active role in shaping the design of his forthcoming Wimbledon statue to avoid the pitfalls seen in previous sports sculptures. Sculptor David Williams-Ellis consulted closely with Murray and his wife Kim Sears to select the pose and ensure a faithful likeness. The life-size statue, part of Wimbledon’s 150th anniversary celebrations, will depict Murray in his early to mid-twenties holding a tennis racket. Williams-Ellis described the challenges of capturing Murray’s movement and character and noted that the couple appear enthused by the progress. The work follows calls from tennis figures such as John McEnroe and Billie Jean King for Murray to be honoured similarly to past champions.
