In pictures: Wildfires devastate parts of Britain as blazes tear through homes and countryside
Wildfires have caused widespread damage across Britain, with major incidents in the West Midlands, South Wales and Hampshire. A Stourbridge fire destroyed 19 homes and damaged 18 others, while South Wales faced three significant incidents and deployed around 200 military personnel to support firefighters. Officials reported 43 new wildfires in a 24-hour period, and England and Wales have already recorded more fires in 2026 than during all of 2025. Authorities have urged residents to avoid activities that could start fires, comply with mobile alerts, keep windows and doors closed near active sites, and call emergency services only when there is a genuine emergency.

Cornwall tourist tax could be ‘game changer’, says Burnham
Andy Burnham said an overnight visitor levy for Cornwall could be a “major game changer,” arguing that tourists should contribute to the services and infrastructure they use rather than leaving residents to fund them through council tax. He also pledged to keep examining the effects of second homes and holiday lets on housing affordability, local businesses and high streets. Burnham invited Cornwall’s political leaders to develop a devolution proposal, saying it could accelerate housing delivery, unlock public land and investment, and reduce the county’s dependence on central government departments. During a visit to a drought-hit potato farm, he said further support for farmers and hospitality businesses would be needed despite existing government measures.

Mothers Are Dying at the Hands of Sons—but Warnings of Violence Are Being Missed
Mothers experiencing abuse from their children can be overlooked by safeguarding, domestic-abuse, police and mental-health services, with no agency clearly responsible—particularly when the child is under 16. Femicide Census data recorded 220 women killed by sons or suspected sons in its dataset, while campaigners and experts warn that violence often escalates from threats and coercive control to physical attacks and murder. Existing domestic-abuse risk tools such as DASH and MARAC are designed mainly for intimate-partner violence and may fail to capture serious parent-child abuse. Survivors describe prolonged terror, institutional disbelief and inadequate support. The Home Office says it plans to introduce a statutory definition, update professional guidance and create a helpline, but campaigners say effective protection also requires specialist pathways, training and coordinated intervention across social services, housing, health, substance-use services and policing.

Patients needing physiotherapy ‘not getting quality of care they deserve’ amid rising service cuts
A Chartered Society of Physiotherapy survey of 548 physiotherapists in England found widespread concern about NHS staffing and service cuts. Recruitment freezes were reported by 72% of respondents, while others cited deleted posts, reduced patient time, lost rehabilitation space and rising disability and waiting times. The society warned that deteriorating physiotherapy services could undermine efforts to reduce hospital admissions, cut waiting lists and move care into the community. It called for recruitment freezes to be lifted and for greater investment in staff, facilities and equipment, while the Department of Health and Social Care said community rehabilitation services are vital and promised action backed by increased NHS investment.

66,000 retirees face year-long wait for pension rise
Around 66,000 pensioners receiving compensation through the Pension Protection Fund or Financial Assistance Scheme will wait until January 2028 for inflation-linked increases on certain pre-1997 pension benefits. About 265,000 other eligible members are expected to receive increases from January 2027. The Pension Protection Fund says the delay is necessary because calculating Guaranteed Minimum Pension entitlements is complex and a phased approach will help ensure payments are accurate. Pension campaigners condemned the decision, arguing that affected retirees have already waited years and that some may die before receiving money they believe they are owed. The Government said the reform is the biggest change to pension compensation in more than 20 years.

The National Fire Chiefs Council has urged people not to use disposable grills in open countryside, parks or moorland after more than 700 wildfires were recorded in England and Wales this year. Labour MP Jon Pearce welcomed the retailers’ action but called for mandatory guidance, a ban on using disposable barbecues in public spaces and stronger government planning for future climate-related fire risks.

Unborn baby boy gets UK-first surgery while still inside his mother's womb in treatment for rare bowel condition

His mother, Maisie Savage, underwent the procedure at 26 weeks of pregnancy at Texas Children's Hospital in Houston as part of a clinical trial involving Great Ormond Street Hospital and KU Leuven. Theo was carried to term and born in February, and doctors report that he is doing remarkably well. The trial is assessing whether returning the intestines to the womb before birth could reduce the prolonged intensive care, tube feeding and repeated surgeries often required after conventional postnatal treatment, potentially making fetal surgery standard care for severe cases in the UK.

Firefighters struggle to contain Madrid wildfires as blazes force 200,000 from homes across France and Spain
Wildfires near Madrid and across south-western France have forced roughly 200,000 people to evacuate or leave their homes, with about 25,000 evacuated near the Spanish capital and more than 110,000 in south-west France. Officials say the Madrid blaze has reached its peak and is too dangerous to attack directly, while a major fire in Gironde has injured around 50 firefighters, closed Bordeaux Airport, and threatened tourist areas including Lège-Cap-Ferret. France has requested assistance through the EU civil protection mechanism, prompting aircraft and helicopter support from several European countries. Fires remain active across central Spain, where more than 100,000 hectares have burned this year, and a firefighter has died in Sicily.
