Mum feared ketamine was going to take her daughter's life
A former ketamine addict from Liverpool describes severe bladder damage and prolonged pain after daily use of the drug. Her mother feared she would die when her liver and kidneys began failing, while clinicians described a vicious cycle in which ketamine worsens bladder pain even as users seek it for temporary relief. A specialist clinic at Royal Liverpool and Aintree hospitals combines urology, pain management, psychological support and addiction services. Megan eventually stopped using ketamine with help from recovery services, returned to competitive football and now volunteers to support others.

“Dysfunctional” staff working relationships criticised in NHS trust report
An NHS England review of Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust found dysfunctional relationships among senior leaders, a divisive and toxic workplace culture, low morale and staff who felt fearful and unable to speak openly. The review warned that internal politics were detracting from patient care, operational performance and staff wellbeing. The report was published privately in late 2025 and became public after a Freedom of Information request and Health Service Journal investigation. Mersey Care says it has strengthened board arrangements, improved governance and launched a programme focused on staff safety, listening and respectful leadership.

Mum's 'tears of joy' as her daughter finally leaves hospital unit
A woman with rare neurological conditions was discharged from a Liverpool specialist hospital after 14 months once a funding dispute between NHS bodies was resolved. Her care package, jointly supported by Sefton Council and NHS Greater Manchester, was finalised following renewed attention prompted by BBC reporting. With support from her mother and local MP Patrick Hurley, she moved to a specialist home in Bolton, ending a prolonged hospital stay caused by delays in establishing responsibility for funding her complex care.

Family fear daughter will never get care plan to leave hospital
A Southport woman with complex neurological conditions has remained in hospital for 14 months due to unresolved NHS funding responsibilities for her community care package. Despite being medically fit for discharge and having a placement arranged in Bolton, last‑minute funding disputes between NHS Cheshire and Merseyside and NHS Greater Manchester have twice halted her move. Her mother fears the delays are inhumane and causing significant distress, prompting involvement from their MP, who is urging the organisations to resolve the issue. The NHS says it is working to secure appropriate care as quickly as possible.
