How a Forgotten Working-Class Sport Is Being Revived in Barnsley
Knurr and Spell, a traditional northern working-class sport sometimes called “poor man’s golf,” is being revived at Thurgoland near Barnsley for Yorkshire Day. Historian Boz Davison and former champions have restarted competitions first held in 2024, seeking to preserve a game once popular across Yorkshire and Lancashire. Players launch and strike a small ball with homemade equipment, but the sport declined in the 1960s and 1970s as local traditions and specialist equipment became difficult to maintain. The 2026 competition produced new records, with Tom Marshall hitting 108 yards, Rachel Marshall reaching 98 yards and Andrew Ockerby recording 96 yards in the over-65s category.
