Hunting for Gold in a Pile of Mercury: The Risky Bet of Melting Down Electronic Waste

19 Aug 2020  |  www.vice.com
In Indonesia, the trend of recycling electronic waste for valuable metals like gold and copper is on the rise among scrap collectors. Despite the lucrative returns, the process poses significant health risks due to exposure to hazardous chemicals like mercury and nitric acid. Workers like Ian, Zakaria, and Nur have been in the business for years, collecting electronic components and selling them to smelters outside Jakarta. Sumarna, a former construction worker, has joined the industry, attracted by the challenge and potential profits. However, the dangers of the job, including potential legal issues due to the lack of proper permits, loom over the workers. The government has regulations in place to manage hazardous waste, but enforcement is challenging, and the industry's impact on health and the environment remains a concern.
