Missouri flooding: Hundreds of children and staff stranded at summer camp airlifted to safety after severe storms and flooding
Severe flooding in southeastern Missouri triggered helicopter evacuations of more than 200 children and staff stranded at Camp Taum Sauk and led to additional rescues at a collapsed campground structure near the Black River. Heavy rainfall of up to 12 inches prompted flash flood warnings, with authorities reporting numerous rescues from rising waters, trees and vehicles. Governor Mike Kehoe declared a state of emergency as major roads became impassable and river levels continued to rise, while officials urged residents in flood‑prone areas to remain alert as more rain was expected.
