A major wildfire at the National Trust’s Dunwich Heath reserve near Leiston devastated about 210 football pitches of rare lowland heath, destroying habitats, wildlife and trees. The National Trust has launched an emergency fundraising appeal to restore the landscape, rebuild wildlife habitats and improve its resilience to climate change. Director-general Hilary McGrady said the charity cannot complete the recovery alone and urged the public to donate.

A wildfire at Dunwich Heath in Suffolk has spread across approximately 150 hectares, equivalent to more than 200 football pitches. The blaze, which began around 5:30 p.m. the previous day, remains difficult to contain because of changing winds. Firefighters, regional support crews and an emergency helicopter using a specialist water bucket are working to control it. The incident has been declared a major emergency, and around 50 people have received support at a rest centre.

A significant wildfire is spreading rapidly across Dunwich Heath in Suffolk toward St James’ Church. Fourteen fire appliances are attending, while hot and windy conditions are hampering efforts and accelerating the spread. Fire crews are using Unimogs, drones and quad bikes, and the public has been urged to avoid the area, keep roads clear and close windows and doors to limit smoke exposure.

Police continue extensive searches for 80‑year‑old Alan Wilson, who went missing from Felixstowe on July 13. CCTV and public reports tracked his movements through Trimley St Martin, with the last confirmed sighting near a village roundabout at 5:38pm. Emergency services and volunteer groups are assisting, and police urge residents to check outdoor areas and report any information, noting he is without medication, money or a mobile phone.

Police reported that 17-year-old Rachel, who had been missing from the Oulton Street and Parkhill area of Oulton Broad since about 1:40 p.m. on July 29, was found later that evening. Suffolk Constabulary had asked local residents to check sheds and outbuildings and review CCTV, and thanked the public for supporting the appeal.
