Three dead and two injured after shooting in Idaho
Three people were killed and at least two others injured in a shooting at or near an In-N-Out Burger on Blue Lakes Boulevard North in Twin Falls, Idaho. Police responded to reports of an active shooter, while officials issued a shelter-in-place order and transported witnesses to the county courthouse. Authorities had not confirmed the identities of those shot or whether the suspected gunman was among the dead, and warned that the number of injured could increase. Nearby businesses, including Chick-fil-A and Magic Valley Mall, closed or entered lockdown as city, county and state authorities continued the investigation.

Burnham says Britain may need a written constitution to be run differently
Andy Burnham argues that expanded devolution and greater regional control over income tax and business rates could require a new written constitutional settlement for the United Kingdom. He says the constitution should guarantee principles including comparable living standards, basic public services and transport links across the country, claiming the current system leaves some regions politically disempowered. The proposals would give more areas strategic-authority status and represent a fundamental change in how Britain is governed.

Farage struck secret Reform comeback deal months before election
Nigel Farage reportedly agreed with then-Reform UK leader Richard Tice in March and April 2024 to take over the party, with the arrangement including repayment or cancellation of more than £1 million in loans from Tice’s company. The agreement appears to challenge Farage’s claim that he decided to return to frontline politics only in June, a timeline he used to justify not declaring financial support and other benefits. The Sunday Times also reported that a £200,000 repayment was sent to Tice personally rather than to Tisun Investments, while electoral filings said the company had been paid. Former treasurer Mehrtash A’Zami said he tried to raise the issue with the Electoral Commission but was stopped. Reform dismissed the claims as misinformation or the work of disgruntled former staff, while the party faces wider scrutiny over donations and Farage faces parliamentary investigations into undisclosed benefits.

Number of crews fighting Suffolk wildfire reduced as National Trust launches emergency appeal
Fire crews reduced the number of appliances tackling the major wildfire at Dunwich Heath near Leiston from 14 to eight after making progress and creating additional firebreaks. Suffolk Fire and Rescue said crews could remain on site for two to three more days and urged people to avoid the area and keep roads clear. The fire severely damaged the rare lowland heath, threatening habitats and species including Dartford warblers, nightjars, skylarks, adders, lizards and silver-studded blue butterflies. The National Trust launched an emergency appeal to fund habitat restoration and improve the site's resilience to future climate conditions. The blaze is among more than 200 wildfires reported in England and Wales in less than two weeks, amid hot, dry weather and widespread drought.

Andy Burnham offering Spain 'what help we can' with border crisis
Andy Burnham offered Spain assistance after around 60,000 migrants crossed into Ceuta from Morocco, in a border incident in which at least 67 people reportedly died through drowning or in a stampede. Spain reinforced the frontier and said most of those who crossed had returned, while Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez condemned the breach as a violation of Spanish territorial integrity. Madrid also rejected criticism from some EU countries and opposed calls to suspend Spain from the Schengen area. The crisis is expected to intensify debate over European migration policy and the UK’s border strategy.

They share a three-year-old son, Sidney, and are reportedly prioritizing amicable co-parenting while Osbourne continues to deal with grief over the death of her father, Ozzy Osbourne.

Zelensky warns Ukraine's air defenses are overwhelmed after latest Russian attack kills 9
A Russian missile assault killed at least nine people, including four children, and injured more than 30 across Kyiv and several other Ukrainian regions. Ukrainian officials said only one of 27 ballistic missiles was intercepted, highlighting severe shortages of US-made Patriot interceptors. Volodymyr Zelensky urged Western allies to provide systems immediately, while Donald Trump backed away from discussing technology-sharing that could enable Ukraine to produce the interceptors. The appeal comes as the United States signals possible reductions in military aid and European countries struggle to compensate.

Bank of England set to hold interest rates despite intensifying Middle East war
The Bank of England is expected to leave its base rate at 3.75% at its 30 July meeting, with economists forecasting a seven-to-two vote for a hold. Although UK inflation fell to 2.6% in June, the Bank expects it to rise to 3.25% later in the year as energy costs feed into household bills. Intensifying conflict involving Iran and disruption risks in the Red Sea have pushed oil above $100 a barrel, potentially worsening inflation and prompting a September rate hike. Weak economic growth, including just 0.1% GDP growth in May, may instead encourage policymakers to keep rates unchanged, leaving relief for borrowers vulnerable to renewed energy-price pressures.

Emotional Adam Ramsay-Peaty Says He's 'Better Than That' After Settling for Bronze
Adam Ramsay-Peaty finished third in the men's 100m breaststroke final at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, behind Australia's Sam Williamson and Jersey's 18-year-old Filip Nowacki. The three-time Olympic champion became emotional afterward, saying he was upset not simply because he won bronze rather than gold, but because he felt his result did not reflect the sacrifices and effort invested in training. The defeat adds to a turbulent Commonwealth Games record after his dominance ended with a fourth-place finish in Birmingham, though he will have another opportunity to win gold in the 50m event.
