One pipe broken as east London water supply issue hits fifth day
A water-supply crisis affecting about 10,000 homes in east London and Essex entered its fifth day after Thames Water repaired three burst pipes but continued working on a fourth. The remaining repair required replacing a three-metre section of damaged pipe beneath a deep trench and near other utility cables. Residents reported low pressure, no water, long queues at bottled-water stations and inadequate assistance for people on the company’s priority services register. Thames Water apologized and promised continued deliveries, while MP Neil Hudson urged the company to improve support, communications and access to water. The disruption has intensified scrutiny of Thames Water, which raised bills by 40% in April 2025 and was fined £122.7m by Ofwat last year.

One pipe broken as east London water supply issue hits fifth day
A water supply crisis affecting about 10,000 homes in east London and Essex entered its fifth day after multiple burst mains. Thames Water repaired three pipes and said a fourth required replacement of a damaged three-metre section, while residents faced low pressure or no water and queued at temporary bottled-water stations. Customers registered as water-dependent said promised deliveries had not arrived, prompting criticism from residents and Epping Forest MP Neil Hudson. The disruption comes amid scrutiny of Thames Water's 40% bill increase, a record Ofwat fine and a £1m signing-on payment to its finance chief.

10,000 homes in east London and Essex face more water disruption
More than 10,000 homes in east London and Essex are experiencing low water pressure or no running water after mains burst on Daisy Road and Chigwell Road in South Woodford. Thames Water says repairs are proving more difficult than expected and has brought in additional teams, while bottled-water distribution points have been established. Residents, including priority-service customer Abdul Jamil, report difficulties obtaining supplies. The company attributed the failures partly to dry ground and exceptionally hot weather, against a backdrop of higher bills and a record Ofwat fine last year.

Heathrow rail services disrupted as tunnel closes
Rail services to Heathrow Airport were severely disrupted after Network Rail closed a tunnel because of a water leak and safety concerns. Elizabeth line trains between Hayes & Harlington and Heathrow Terminals 4 and 5 were suspended until late morning, while Heathrow Express services from Paddington were reduced to two trains per hour. Disruption was expected to continue throughout the day, with affected tickets accepted on the Piccadilly line and several bus routes, although Heathrow Express initially refused Elizabeth line tickets. Passengers reported missed-connection fears and significant frustration. Services to Gatwick Airport were also disrupted by a separate fire near Purley.

Why there's a row about standing up while drinking in central London
Westminster City Council's draft licensing policy has prompted claims that standing while drinking could be restricted in Soho and the wider West End. The council says it is not proposing a ban, but wants new venues to provide more seating, table service and controls on overcrowding, excessive drinking and public nuisance. Businesses and Conservative politicians warn that the proposals could damage London's night-time economy, while Mayor Sadiq Khan has criticized an overly restrictive approach. The Soho Society says alcohol-related harm, crime and disruption to residents must also be considered.

Queer community knows losing spaces an emergency
LGBTQ+ venues in London are facing pressure and closures, prompting concern that Soho is losing its historic queer identity. Matthew Jacobs Morgan says Coven aims to reclaim the former G-A-Y space through nightlife, music, a daytime queer department store and a coffee shop. Former G-A-Y operator Jeremy Joseph criticizes local authorities for neglecting Old Compton Street, while the Night Time Industries Association stresses Soho's cultural and economic importance. Operators in Elephant and Castle argue that newer neighborhood-based venues complement, rather than replace, Soho.

Wanstead milkman given Freedom of the City of London
Steve Hayden, a 68-year-old milkman who has delivered dairy products in east London since 1984, has received the Freedom of the City of London at a Guildhall ceremony. Nominated as a pillar of the community, Hayden was recognised for his long-standing service and for twice alerting emergency services when elderly customers had collapsed at home. Doorstep milk delivery has declined sharply in the UK, from 99% of milk deliveries in 1970 to 3% last year, but Hayden says he will continue working as long as his health permits and customers want him to.

Four London Overground bridges to be replaced
Four 130‑year‑old London Overground bridges in Forest Gate will be replaced beginning in September, requiring weekend rail closures and continuous road closures beneath the structures. Network Rail plans phased work through 2027, including extending support structures, demolishing old decks and installing new spans, with completion expected by late summer 2027. Public information sessions will be held in August, and the upgraded bridges are projected to last until 2150.

Padel courts to replace London’s only full‑size indoor skate park
London’s only full‑size indoor skate park in Barking will close on 2 August after operator GLL decided to replace it with indoor padel courts, citing persistent financial losses and falling visitor numbers. Campaigners led by Eleanor Dunlop argue the facility, funded with £500,000 of public money, is vital for a deprived community that relies on accessible and safe youth recreation spaces. GLL says customer feedback and a 25% drop in visits informed the decision, while Sport England has approved the transformation to support growing demand for padel.

Black Horse pub in Barnet nearly runs out of beer after reopening
A historic Barnet pub dating to the 1720s has reopened after three local residents secured its lease from Star Pubs, drawing strong community support that nearly emptied its beer supply during the third weekend. The new operators emphasise the cultural and social importance of pubs to local life, while customers praise the revival as a genuine community effort reflecting Barnet’s long pub heritage.
