West Yorkshire spends £791m a year on prescriptions
West Yorkshire has England’s third-highest prescription spending, with an annual bill of £791,785,012 and average spending of £292.42 per person. The region records the highest number of prescription items per person, at 35.5 annually. Only Cambridgeshire and Peterborough and Herefordshire and Worcestershire spend more per person, while North West London spends the least. The figures come from NHS Business Services Authority data analyzed by Cured Pharmacy, whose co-founder Tarun Kumar attributed regional differences largely to variation in individual prescription costs.

Keighley logistics company invests £250,000 to cut emissions

North Yorkshire leaders renew calls for disposable BBQ ban
North Yorkshire deputy mayor Jo Coles and Mayor David Skaith have renewed calls for a county-wide ban on disposable barbecues after a major moorland wildfire last year destroyed about 25 square kilometres of peatland. A more recent fire in Wykeham Forest near Scarborough was also linked directly to a disposable barbecue. Some retailers have already stopped selling the products, while the UK Government considers making the change compulsory. Bradford College and credit union mark 10 years of success
Bradford College and Bradford District Credit Union are marking a decade of apprenticeship collaboration. Since taking on its first Bradford College apprentice in 2016, BDCU has made apprenticeships central to its workforce strategy, with about 40% of current staff being current or former apprentices. The credit union has also grown from 3,000 to more than 12,000 members and increased its payroll partnerships from three to 34. Its achievements were recognised at the West Yorkshire Apprenticeship Awards 2026, where BDCU won SME Employer of the Year and apprentice Ariba Matloob won Advanced Apprentice of the Year; she has since joined the finance and credit control team and received a national award nomination.

University of Bradford ranked first for social mobility
The University of Bradford has been ranked first in England for improving access to higher education, with the Social Mobility Commission recognising its success in reaching disadvantaged students while accounting for their location. Yorkshire People Losing £129 a Year to ‘Hidden Fees’
People in Yorkshire and the Humber are estimated to lose £128.60 a year to hidden fees and unclear charges, according to research commissioned by iD Mobile. The study found that 75% regularly pay charges they consider unfair because they lack practical alternatives, while 67% feel exploited by the issue. Energy standing charges, shrinkflation, airport drop-off fees and car parking costs were among the main frustrations, and 78% said hidden fees and unclear price increases have worsened over the past five years.

enfinium has agreed a long-term fuel supply deal with REMONDIS UK, which will provide 10,000 tonnes of residual waste annually to enfinium’s Ferrybridge 1 and 2 and Skelton Grange energy-from-waste facilities. Classic Mozart opera gets Yorkshire twist in Bradford
Bradford Opera Festival is staging a Yorkshire adaptation of Mozart’s The Marriage of Figaro, relocating the action to 1970s Bradford and presenting it in Yorkshire dialect. Adapted by Ian McMillan and directed and reorchestrated by Ben Crick, the production combines Western and Indian classical music, with some arias translated into Urdu and Punjabi by Kauser Mukhtar. Shipley groups urged to apply for share of £150,000 funding

Bradford Literature Festival lands international partner
Bradford Literature Festival has announced Humaniti International as its new international partner. Young children who spend more time in playgrounds are happier
An analysis of the British Children’s Pre-School Play Survey found that children aged two to four who spend more time in playgrounds tend to be happier and experience fewer emotional difficulties. Playgrounds were the most popular play space outside the home, with children averaging 139 hours there annually. Although 83% used playgrounds weekly in spring and summer and more than two-thirds did so in autumn and winter, around one in 20 preschool children spent fewer than 10 hours a year in them. The Association of Play Industries said the findings reinforce the role of playgrounds as important public health infrastructure.

More than 400 military vehicles to take over Yorkshire
Yorkshire Wartime 2026 will feature more than 400 historic military vehicles at Willows Farm in Doncaster from August 7 to 9. Bradford care workers face tough challenge to raise money

Eastwood Community School and Swain House Primary have become the first schools in Bradford district to receive Modeshift STARS Good accreditation for promoting sustainable and active travel. Denholme won the John Clayton Cup at Silsden, defeating holders Gargrave II by 126 runs. Four-way traffic lights to cause disruption on Bradford road
Four-way temporary traffic lights will be installed on Haworth Road in Allerton, Bradford, at its junctions with Cottingley Road, Wilsden Road and Stony Lane. Northern Gas Networks is replacing ageing metal gas pipes with plastic ones, with the works expected to run from August 3 until mid-September.
