Android earthquake alert system and Iranian scientist Mostafa Mousavi: Will it work for Iran?
Google’s Android-based earthquake alert system, developed in part by Iranian scientist Mostafa Mousavi, uses accelerometers in smartphones to detect initial seismic waves and warn users before destructive shaking arrives. Recent earthquakes in Venezuela demonstrated the system’s effectiveness, alerting millions ahead of strong tremors. Although the system is available in Iran, widespread internet disruptions and persistent GPS issues could limit its reliability. Mousavi stresses that early-warning systems based on initial seismic waves are the most achievable protection with current technology, complementing rather than replacing national systems. While national systems require major investment, the Android system functions at far lower cost and reaches users in about 100 countries. The article also explains activation steps for users to ensure alerts are enabled on their devices.
