Bring on the Pies to Remind Us of Autumn and Winter
Helen Mead celebrates the approach of autumn and winter, describing her fondness for cold weather, darker evenings, seasonal clothing and hearty comfort foods such as pies, casseroles and stews. She notes that people in the UK appear to be tiring of heatwave salads, with Waitrose reporting increased sales of cottage pies and greater searches for traditional warm dishes. School-uniform displays, the return of University Challenge, autumnal shop displays and the appearance of coal and logs are also welcomed as signs that summer is ending, although prematurely changing vegetation caused by dry conditions remains an environmental concern.

Art Highlights Fiona Laskaris’s Campaign to Help Vulnerable People
An art workshop at Bradford’s Mayfield Centre brought together people with learning disabilities, learning difficulties and neurodivergence to create footwear-themed artwork supporting Fiona Laskaris’s campaign. Laskaris is urging the UK Government to back a Vulnerable Adults Bill that would let families request mental-capacity assessments when they fear a vulnerable person is being groomed or exploited. The campaign follows the exploitation and murder of her son Christopher in 2016. Bradford People First organised the event to raise awareness of disability hate crime and mate crime, with the artwork intended to symbolise unity, shared experiences and collective action.

I tested the popular snack falafels - not all came up trumps
Helen Mead reviews eight supermarket falafel products, assessing appearance, texture, flavor and value after heating them. Lidl’s Vermondo Plant Middle Eastern Falafel is the clear winner, scoring 5/5 for its crisp exterior, moist interior, strong flavor and low price. Tesco scores 4/5, while Asda, M&S and Sainsbury’s receive 3/5. Aldi and Cauldron score 2/5 for bland or dry textures, and Waitrose comes last at 1/5 because its aniseed flavor is overpowering and its price is high.

I've worked in places disturbingly similar to The Office
Workplace experiences are compared with the characters and situations depicted in The Office, highlighting how closely the show reflects real office dynamics, personalities, awkward interactions and corporate culture. The writer describes similar encounters with difficult managers, office stereotypes, and memorable office parties, noting that other workplace comedies have not matched the show's realism. The series is praised for its accuracy, relatability and enduring brilliance.

We put strawberry and vanilla ice cream to the test
Strawberry and vanilla ice cream cones from major UK supermarkets were compared for appearance, flavour, texture and value. Asda scored highest for overall quality, while Farmfoods earned praise for its exceptionally crunchy cone. Several options, including Bon Gelati and Iceland, were marked down for soft or bland wafers, and Tesco’s cones were criticised for overly sweet toppings. Cornetto and M&S offered good flavour but were considered less competitive on value.

Rabbits have a raw deal as pets - let's try and change that
Personal experiences with pet rabbits highlight common neglect and inadequate care, leading to support for proposals in Wales that would require owners to complete basic training before acquiring a rabbit. The RSPCA and rabbit charities warn that rabbits are among the most frequently mistreated pets and back efforts to strengthen welfare standards. The piece also references broader concerns about the mistreatment of various animals and argues that stronger checks on prospective owners would help prevent neglect.

Mum would be amused to see pinnies on the catwalks
Aprons have become high-fashion items, with luxury brands reimagining them as statement pieces, a trend the writer views with amusement through memories of her mother’s constant use of practical pinnies. She reflects on her husband’s extensive apron collection and his disinterest in the fashion narrative surrounding them, appreciating aprons for their utilitarian and sentimental value rather than as designer accessories.
