Alan George Ferguson, a Scottish academic who spent most of his career in Africa, is remembered for his deep connection to Kenya, where he lectured at Nairobi University and carried out development research for AMREF and GTZ, integrating closely with local communities. His marriage to nurse Florence Miyawa rooted him further in the country. After sustaining a serious head injury, he returned to Glasgow, where he spent the rest of his life. Tributes to Scottish D-Day warrior who survived Stalag IV-B
Jim Glennie, a 100-year-old D-Day veteran from Turriff and the last surviving Gordon Highlander from the Second World War, is remembered for his courage in Normandy, his imprisonment in Stalag IV-B, and his lifelong dedication to preserving regimental history. After surviving heavy combat and a serious injury, he endured harsh conditions as a prisoner of war before returning home to build a long family life and a welding career. Glennie remained deeply involved with the Gordon Highlanders Museum for decades, fostering reconciliation, including with former German soldier Karl Hunnold. Military colleagues and family praised his humility, service, and commitment to ensuring future generations understood the necessity of resisting tyranny while striving to prevent future conflicts.
