Gerard Trojanowski, 44, died after being struck by multiple vehicles, including a marked Dyfed-Powys Police car, during a six-vehicle crash on the A40 in Carmarthen on 28 July. His family paid tribute to him as a loving husband and father and asked for privacy. No arrests were made, while the police force referred the incident to the Independent Office for Police Conduct.

Poet and law professor Emyr Lewis has won the National Eisteddfod Chair for a second time, having previously received the award in 1994. Judges praised his winning awdl for its originality, describing it as an exhilarating and tender work that takes the traditional long poem into unconventional, subconscious territory. The competition attracted 16 entries, the highest number since 1988. Lewis, who moved from London to Wales as a child, has published three poetry collections and will receive a chair made with wood from west Wales. Next year’s Eisteddfod will be held near Machynlleth in Powys.

A second body, identified as Simon Wilson, was found in the sea near Llwyngwril in Gwynedd on 28 July during the search for two kayakers missing since 21 July. The body of Connor Parfitt had been found on a beach in Aberystwyth on 26 July. North Wales Police informed Wilson’s family and the coroner, while police thanked partner agencies, volunteers and the public and asked that both families’ privacy be respected.
