UK Government's Mobile Wildfire Alert in Welsh Sparks Flood of 999 Calls to North Wales Police
A Welsh-language UK Government emergency alert warning of very high wildfire risk was followed by a second English message and reportedly repeated notifications, causing confusion and a surge of unnecessary 999 calls to North Wales Police. At least eight wildfires were burning across south and mid Wales, prompting a major incident declaration, evacuations and warnings about disposable barbecues, firepits and other ignition sources. The government announced a temporary ban on disposable barbecues and the deployment of 100 additional military personnel, while Welsh Labour criticized the Welsh Government for what it called a slow and poorly coordinated response.

Military called in as wildfires rage across south Wales
The British Army has been asked to support firefighting operations in south Wales as crews tackle seven wildfires following prolonged hot and dry weather. Homes have been evacuated in several communities, while a major incident has been declared near Rhandirmwyn and a fire near Ebbw Vale has burned about 400 hectares. South Wales Fire and Rescue Service says military assistance will provide logistical and defensive capacity, strengthen resilience and support exhausted firefighters. The Welsh Government is prepared to fund the operation and is urging the public to avoid activities that could start further fires and to keep windows and doors closed because of smoke.

Mum who was 'glue of our family' tragically died after choking on food in restaurant
Ceri Ball, a 74-year-old woman from Rogerstone, Newport, died in October 2025 after choking on steak while dining with her husband, Glyn, at a restaurant in Peñíscola, Spain. Restaurant staff and paramedics resuscitated her, but prolonged oxygen deprivation caused irreversible brain damage, and she died the following day at Vinaros Hospital. A written inquest at Gwent Coroners' Court concluded that her death resulted from asphyxia caused by food obstructing her airway. Her daughter Lisa Lisseman described Ball as the family's “glue” and launched a GoFundMe appeal to support the Repatriation Services Trust, which helped return her body home.
