Pet owners issued warning after escaped tortoise hit by car
A six-year-old tortoise named Tom survived being hit by a car after escaping from his home in Taunton. Vets at Kingfisher Veterinary Practice repaired his severely cracked shell with wires and epoxy resin, and he returned to normal activity within two weeks, although full healing may take years. The incident has prompted warnings that warm weather can make tortoises more active and likely to escape, with owners advised to inspect garden boundaries, use secure fox-proof enclosures and consider microchipping. The GSPCA says it receives 20 to 30 lost or escaped tortoises annually, particularly during warm periods.

Cradley woman is selling everything she owns on Vinted to fund breast reduction and stop men making comments
Sian Jesson, a 27-year-old NHS health adviser from Cradley, says her 34J breasts cause severe back and shoulder pain, breathing difficulties and profound distress after years of unwanted sexual attention and bullying. She has reportedly spent nearly nine years on an NHS waiting list for breast reduction surgery and says doctors repeatedly focused on her weight, contributing to an eating disorder despite her losing weight. Seeking the £9,500 cost of private treatment, she is selling her clothes on Vinted while a friend, Callie, has established a GoFundMe fundraiser. The NHS Black Country Integrated Care Board was contacted for comment.

Tourist warning as Greece wildfires continue around Athens region
Wildfires driven by gale-force winds spread through western Attica, threatening communities, an industrial district near Megara and the seaside settlement of Porto Germeno. Authorities ordered further evacuations while nearly 500 firefighters and 23 aircraft responded, although dangerous conditions restricted aerial firefighting. Fires also prompted evacuations on Kefalonia and affected areas of Halkidiki; earlier blazes killed three firefighters, and two firefighting helicopters collided near Porto Germeno. The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office warned British visitors that Greece faces a high wildfire risk through October and urged them to monitor emergency alerts, follow official instructions and contact travel operators if affected.

Macclesfield teen 'should still be alive' after NHS ‘mistakes’ contributed to his death
An inquest found that 19-year-old Isaac Arrowsmith’s death from pulmonary embolism, deep vein thrombosis and Haemoglobin Rainier disease was preventable. Despite repeated presentations with chest pain, breathlessness and coughing blood, Macclesfield District General Hospital diagnosed pneumonia, did not conduct tests to rule out a pulmonary embolism and failed to refer him properly to its respiratory virtual ward. The coroner concluded Isaac should have been admitted on December 31 and would probably have survived if he had been in hospital when his condition deteriorated. His parents criticised the NHS’s handling of the case and reported it to the Care Quality Commission. East Cheshire NHS Trust apologised, accepted that Isaac did not receive appropriate care and described training, electronic-record and multidisciplinary-review changes intended to reduce the risk of similar failures.

We swapped West Midlands for country 1,000 miles away where bills are half the price
Brittany Balinski, her Polish husband and their four children moved from north Warwickshire to Gdansk in July 2026, replacing a three-bedroom home with a rented six-bedroom house overlooking a forest. The family sold their UK home for £275,000 and relocated for under £3,000, enabled by the husband’s Polish nationality, the children’s dual citizenship and Brittany’s remote work. They estimate that rent, food, meals out, fuel and other everyday expenses are generally lower in Poland, although wages, cars and days out can be more expensive. Brittany says the move has improved her husband’s quality of life and given the family more space and access to nature, while she is learning Polish and adapting to driving and local bureaucracy. She says the decision was personal rather than political and that the family has received an overwhelmingly positive response online.

Couple buy £40k narrowboat to beat London rents
Jan Gazda and Lizzie Jones bought the £40,000 narrowboat Harvest Moon and became continuous cruisers to reduce their housing costs in London. They pay about £75 a month in onboard bills, around £3,000–£5,000 annually for maintenance and roughly £800 a month on a specialist marine mortgage, which carries 15% interest. Although the boat provides a fully equipped home and costs less than renting, the couple face challenges including finding new moorings every two weeks, difficult maintenance and uncertainty over rising Canal & River Trust licence fees and proposed surcharges for boats without permanent moorings.

Scottish girls pay hundreds for Bruno Mars gig ruined by horrible seats in front of pillar
Three Scottish sisters travelled to Berlin to see Bruno Mars but found their expensive seats fully obstructed by a pillar, despite no warning of restricted views on Ticketmaster. Venue staff said alternative seats offered were even worse, leaving the group rotating between the only partially viewable seat. Their mother is seeking refunds and compensation after Ticketmaster directed responsibility to the event organiser, while the Olympic Stadium expressed regret and said alternative seats had been offered. A video of the obstructed view went viral, prompting widespread criticism of the seating arrangements.
