Halesowen MP Welcomes Plans to Give Locals More Say Over High Street Shops
Labour Halesowen MP Alex Ballinger has welcomed government proposals to give councils greater control over high-street businesses. The plans would remove the “Aim to Permit” rule for new betting shops and 24-hour slot-machine venues, require planning permission for vape shops and adult gaming centres, and allow authorities to prevent vape shops from opening near schools. Closure Orders for premises linked to organised crime would also be extended from six to 12 months. Ballinger said the measures could help address concerns about rogue businesses and drug dealing in Halesowen-area town centres, including Cradley Heath. The wider package also includes a £2 bus-fare cap and a planned 20% business-rates reduction for pubs, social clubs and live-music venues.
