This piece highlights the current state of Ghana's forest reserves and the interventions being undertaken by the European Union to restore the country's depleted forest landscape through the launch of a €2.4 million forest restoration initiative. The project is aimed at rehabilitating 5,000 hectares of degraded forest land while improving the livelihoods of 20,000 farmers and rural dwellers across Ghana.
The project was launched at the Forest Research Institute of Ghana (FORIG) in Fumesua, within the Ejisu Municipality of the Ashanti Region.
Ghana's forests play a vital role in conserving biodiversity, enhancing climate resilience, ensuring water and food security, and serving as a key source of livelihood and economic support for many rural communities.
Following a decline in global cocoa prices, the Government of Ghana, through the Ministry of Finance, announced a reduction in the producer price of cocoa on the local market. The decision had a significant impact on many cocoa farmers, some of whom chose to sell their farms to illegal small-scale gold miners in search of better financial returns.
Concerned about the growing trend and its implications for cocoa production, environmental sustainability, and rural livelihoods, I took a keen interest in engaging cocoa farmers to better understand the factors influencing their decisions. Through this reporting, I sought to highlight the economic pressures facing farmers and the unintended consequences of declining cocoa prices, including the expansion of illegal mining into cocoa-growing communities.
