IOC provisionally lifts Russia Olympic ban as athletes eye LA 2028 games
The IOC provisionally lifted the suspension of the Russian Olympic Committee, potentially allowing Russian athletes to compete under their national flag at the 2028 Los Angeles Games. The decision followed a legal review confirming the ROC no longer includes organizations from territories under Ukrainian Olympic jurisdiction and has pledged not to operate there. Russia welcomed the ruling, emphasizing a politics‑free Olympic movement, while the IOC reiterated its condemnation of the invasion of Ukraine but stated athletes should not be barred due to government actions. The move follows earlier permissions for Russian and Belarusian athletes to compete as neutrals at recent Olympic and Paralympic events, where participation and medal counts fell sharply compared to previous Games.
