Botley Road’s reopening has been delayed an additional four to six weeks after gas leaks were discovered during drainage work, extending a closure that began in April 2023. Oxford MPs Layla Moran and Anneliese Dodds condemned the setback, citing prolonged disruption for residents and businesses and questioning oversight and project management. Network Rail attributed the delay to repairs required by Southern Gas Networks and apologized for continued uncertainty. The postponement also affects the county council’s planned traffic filter scheme, which depended on the road reopening.

A government decision on reorganising Oxfordshire’s local authorities is expected, with options including creating one, two, or three new unitary councils, potentially involving West Berkshire. Oxford City Council’s proposal is rumoured to be favoured, drawing concern from MP Calum Miller. Minister Alison McGovern stated the process is being followed as planned, with an announcement due this week.
