Little Girl Dies of Cancer After Doctors Assume Facial Lump Was Caused by Parents
Delilah-Rai Reid-Floyd, a 19-month-old girl from the United Kingdom, died after a facial lump first identified in January was allegedly misdiagnosed and subjected to multiple delays in referral, specialist assessment and biopsy. Her mother, Kayleigh Reid, says doctors initially suspected parental harm, later diagnosed a non-cancerous desmoid fibromatosis tumour, and only subsequently identified soft tissue cancer after the tumour had severely damaged the child’s facial bones. Surgery was cancelled in favour of chemotherapy because the procedure was considered too risky, but Delilah-Rai died days later. Kayleigh is pursuing legal action and wants the NHS held accountable. Birmingham Women's and Children's NHS Foundation Trust and The Dudley Group NHS Foundation Trust have expressed condolences and launched or promised internal reviews.
