Nigel Farage resigns as MP and triggers Clacton by-election
Nigel Farage resigned as MP for Clacton, triggering a by-election in which he plans to stand again, framing the contest as a battle between voters and the political establishment. The resignation follows scrutiny over undeclared financial support from associate George Cottrell and a separate investigation into a £5 million gift from donor Christopher Harborne. Labour has urged the Electoral Commission to investigate, while the Liberal Democrats want the parliamentary standards probe expanded. Farage denies wrongdoing and describes the allegations as an establishment attempt to undermine Reform UK. US President Donald Trump publicly expressed support for him. The by-election will determine whether Farage returns to Parliament or loses a key platform as Reform UK seeks to challenge Labour and the Conservatives.
