DWP Refunds Claimants After Admitting Fraud Penalty Errors
The Department for Work and Pensions is refunding benefit claimants after finding that 197 administrative fraud penalties were wrongly issued in 2023/24 and 2024/25. The errors involved procedural mistakes, insufficient evidence and failure to fully consider claimants’ circumstances. The DWP has removed the penalties, contacted affected customers and introduced new guidance, training, oversight and independent decision-making procedures. Refunds do not cancel any underlying benefit overpayments, which claimants must still repay.

DWP warning for pensioners and Universal Credit over August payments
Benefit payments due on the August 31 bank holiday will generally be paid early on Friday, August 28, including Universal Credit, State Pension, Child Benefit, PIP and other payments. The payment amounts will not change, but recipients may need to budget for a longer gap before payments return to their normal schedule. The change applies across the UK, including areas where the bank holiday may not apply locally.

New push to lift HMRC Personal Allowance to £18,000
A petition calling for the UK Personal Allowance to rise from £12,570 to £18,000 has secured 49,123 signatures, driven by concerns that frozen thresholds are pulling more workers into Income Tax through fiscal drag. The Government has rejected the proposal, estimating that it would cost more than £40 billion annually. The petition remains open until 30 September 2026 and would be considered for a parliamentary debate if it reaches 100,000 signatures.
