‘Rip-off’ Subscription Traps to Be Tackled Under New Rules
The UK Government plans new subscription rules due to take effect in January 2027, requiring clearer sign-up information, regular renewal reminders, easier cancellation and a 14-day cooling-off period after trials or long-term renewals. The measures target a problem estimated to cost consumers £1.6 billion annually across roughly 155 million active UK subscriptions. A separate consultation will consider whether fake ‘was’ prices, invented discounts and misleading recommended retail prices should automatically be treated as unfair commercial practices. Which? and Citizens Advice welcomed the proposals while calling for strong enforcement.
