‘Within my grasp’: Josh Kerr targets 1500m world record after Commonwealth triumph in Glasgow
Josh Kerr celebrated his Commonwealth Games mile victory in Glasgow after previously breaking Hicham El Guerrouj’s mile world record. The Scottish runner now aims to challenge El Guerrouj’s 28-year-old 1500m record, while also targeting a second world 1500m title and Olympic gold. Kerr said the record is within reach but stressed the need to manage pressure and avoid overextending himself, crediting his support team and sporting role models Chris Hoy and Andy Murray.

Josh Kerr has begun his Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games campaign after qualifying for the mile final at Scotstoun, where he will defend home advantage against 12 other sub-four-minute finalists. Australia’s Cameron Myers emerged as a major challenger with a 3:43.85 heat, while fellow Scot Jake Wightman also advanced. Kerr, who recently set a world mile record of 3:42.66, expects a fiercely competitive final as he targets Commonwealth gold and reflects on returning to the track where his career began.

“Loved every second”: Weightlifter to cut short Commonwealth Games experience to start job as junior doctor
Alex Mackay, a 23-year-old Scottish weightlifter, finished seventh in the women’s 48kg event at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games after overcoming injuries and moving up from the 45kg category. Her Games experience will be brief because, just two days later, she is due to begin a two-year junior-doctor placement at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Newcastle. Mackay described the challenge of balancing university, relocation, employment and elite sport, and said she has joined a welcoming weightlifting club in Newcastle.
