Manchester United insist new stadium ‘not vanity project’ despite prospect of more debt
Manchester United outlined plans for a proposed 100,000‑seat stadium to be built near Old Trafford, acknowledging that additional debt may be required while stressing the project must remain financially disciplined. Stadium project chief Collette Roche said multiple funding options, including naming rights, are being considered and emphasised the need for sustainable costs amid ongoing financial tightening at the club. Supporters have raised concerns about potential debt levels, but Roche argued that borrowing is normal for major infrastructure developments and highlighted expected long‑term revenue growth. The design remains flexible, and approval of the wider redevelopment master plan by Trafford council would trigger a public consultation, with the goal of opening the new stadium by 2035.
