Man charged after woman allegedly imprisoned and assaulted for days in North Belfast
A 40-year-old man has been charged with multiple offences, including three counts of rape, sexual assault by penetration, grievous bodily harm with intent, non-fatal strangulation, possession of an offensive weapon, false imprisonment and domestic abuse. Police allege that a woman escaped from a property in North Belfast after being held there for several days. The man is also charged with three burglaries and is due to appear at Belfast Magistrates’ Court on 26 August. The Public Prosecution Service will review the charges.
Northern Ireland Households Could Get £50 Electricity Bill Discount in October
Northern Ireland households could receive more than £50 off their electricity bills in October 2026. Economy Minister Caoimhe Archibald is seeking Treasury approval to combine a previously announced £30 Domestic Electricity Discount Scheme payment with an additional £20 equivalent to support available through a UK-wide VAT reduction on domestic electricity. The combined payment is intended to provide increased cost-of-living assistance during the winter, replacing the planned September payment with a single October payment.
Belfast council motion 'demands action' on allowing maternity units into Gaza
Independent Belfast councillor Paul Doherty is bringing a motion before Belfast City Council calling for urgent action to allow three purpose-built mobile maternity units into Gaza. Developed through the Gaels Against Genocide initiative with support from Belfast and across Ireland, the units are intended to provide care for pregnant women, mothers and newborn babies but have been blocked from entering the region. The motion urges the Irish and British governments and relevant international bodies to secure their immediate and unrestricted entry.
