'Hotter and hotter and hotter' - Europe's new climate in seven charts
Record-breaking heatwaves across the UK and Europe in May and June illustrate a rapidly warming climate driven by greenhouse gas emissions. Scientists note that many temperature records were exceeded by unusually large margins, with high humidity and elevated nighttime temperatures increasing the health risks. The same heat system affected much of Europe, where numerous countries experienced unprecedented June temperatures. Rapid regional warming, shrinking snow and ice cover, cleaner air and possible changes in atmospheric circulation all contribute to increasingly frequent and intense heatwaves. Marine heatwaves around Europe are also intensifying, further amplifying land-based heat. Researchers agree that future hot spells will continue to grow hotter until global emissions reach net zero.
