The Health Benefits of Yogurt
Yogurt can contribute protein, calcium, phosphorus and B vitamins to a balanced diet, and varieties containing live cultures may support gut health and lactose digestion. Research suggests possible links between regular yogurt consumption and lower inflammation, type 2 diabetes risk and body weight, but the evidence does not establish clear cause and effect or confirm how much yogurt is needed. Consumers are advised to choose plain, low-sugar products, check protein and calcium levels, look for live bacteria, and examine saturated fat and fortification in plant-based alternatives. Sweetened yogurt may still be preferable to sugary drinks but should be treated as a snack rather than a health food.
