A painting inherited by retired accountant Mary-Louise Wedderburn was authenticated on BBC One’s Fake or Fortune? as an 18th-century work by Scottish artist Katherine Read. The portrait of an Indian woman is believed to be the earliest recorded painting of an Indian sitter by a European female artist. Art historian Charles Greig expressed certainty about Read’s authorship, while Philip Mould estimated the painting could be worth £100,000 or more. Wedderburn was particularly pleased by the discovery because Read was her distant relative.
