Prime Minister Carney says Canada is ready to respond if Trump's new tariffs go into effect
Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada is intensifying negotiations with the United States but is prepared to retaliate if President Donald Trump's threatened 50% tariffs on Canadian goods take effect on August 19. The tariffs would cover products including honey, liquor, cement, dairy goods, wood products and hockey sticks, while excluding energy, potash, fish and critical minerals. Canadian officials and provincial leaders are seeking a united response, while analysts warn that the measures could weaken business confidence, reduce investment and affect Ontario, Quebec and British Columbia most severely. Canada is also considering stronger trade relationships with countries beyond the United States.
