South Shields 'Death Railway' memorial unveiled on VJ Day
A 10-metre section of former Tyne and Wear Metro track has been unveiled in South Shields’ North Marine Park as part of a memorial to Allied prisoners forced by Japan to build the Thailand-Burma Death Railway during World War Two. The track was added beside Ray Lonsdale’s sculpture of Sunderland veteran Len Gibson, who endured the railway’s brutal conditions. Volunteers from Nexus installed the materials, with the length symbolizing the estimated two deaths for every 10 metres of railway constructed. The memorial was formally unveiled during VJ Day commemorations attended by veterans and members of the public.

Guisborough festival trials children's sensory zone
A sensory zone was piloted at the 2026 Summer Sounds festival in Guisborough to support children with neurodiverse and sensory needs. Run by Bishop Auckland-based Hiyed, the quiet tent provided tools such as weighted blankets and ear defenders, helping families manage overstimulation and avoid meltdowns. Parents reported that the space allowed their children to regulate while still enjoying the event. Organisers said the initiative aimed to make the long-running festival more inclusive and accessible to all attendees.

Anti-social crime leaves South Shields "like the Wild West"
Residents in South Shields report rising anti-social behaviour involving youths, criminal damage and intimidation, with some comparing the situation to the Wild West. A family whose van was attacked with an axe and other locals describe a lack of effective police response, leading many to turn to a growing community social media group to document incidents. Mark Berriman and other residents highlight problems including e-motorbike misuse and vandalism, while Stagecoach North East temporarily halted local bus services due to safety concerns. Northumbria Police cite ongoing operations, drone support and targeted patrols, and South Tyneside Council urges residents to report incidents through official channels.
