Call for change to 'unsustainable' student loan system

The Treasury Select Committee has said the framework should be made fairer and more sustainable, while critics object to the retrospective freezing of the Plan 2 repayment threshold, which causes graduates to begin repaying sooner and pay more as their incomes rise. Lake argues that many graduates were misled about the terms of their loans, with around 90% of current Plan 2 borrowers reportedly seeing their overall debt increase despite making repayments. Supporters of reform warn that the system creates a substantial financial burden and may deter people from pursuing higher education.
