Major James Gives Talk on British Army Training at Club
Major Owen James spoke to Penarth Probus Club about his 2004 officer training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst. Using photographs, video and personal anecdotes, he described drills, route marches, field exercises, trench digging, inspections and the development of leadership, resilience, character and service. He also compared his experiences with contemporary training, noting that the institution’s core focus remains largely unchanged. The presentation was warmly received and prompted questions from several former military members. The club’s next meeting will feature a talk by Jeff Norman on modern slavery, and new members are welcome.

Penarth primary school awarded School of Sanctuary
St Joseph’s RC Primary School in Penarth received School of Sanctuary status for its inclusive environment supporting refugees and asylum seekers. Assessors commended its culture of empathy, diversity and global citizenship, as well as its professional learning initiatives and pupil-led projects. Partnerships with refugee organisations and participation in events promoting social justice contributed to the recognition, marking a significant milestone in the school’s commitment to Catholic Social Teaching and community engagement.

MHA Morel Court, Penarth, summer fair raises more than £2,000
A summer fair at MHA Morel Court in Penarth raised £2,177 to support resident activities, including an upcoming day trip to Barry Island. Around 90 visitors attended the event, which featured stalls and refreshments. Administration manager Mandy Jenkins praised the strong community turnout and positive feedback from attendees.

Côr Heol y March wins international Eisteddfod
A children’s choir from the Vale of Glamorgan, Côr Heol y March, won first place in the Senior Children’s Choir category at the Llangollen International Eisteddfod, performing under conductor Eleri Roberts with accompanist Ieuan Jones. Adjudicators praised the group’s confident performance, and the choir is now preparing for its appearance at the National Eisteddfod later in the summer. Their CD, Gwahoddiad, is available for purchase.

Clinic with 'faster care' for Vale women opens in Penarth
A new women’s health clinic, Richmond House Clinic, has opened in Penarth, offering faster access to diagnosis and treatment in areas such as menopause care, gynaecological surgery, cervical screening and skin concerns. Founded by consultant surgeon Amar Ghattaura as part of the Amar Group, the clinic is staffed by NHS consultants and aims to expand specialist services for women across Penarth, Cardiff and nearby areas. It shares its site with Amar Aesthetics, which already operates locally.
