Historic Chepstow Bridge's Landmark Anniversary This Year
Chepstow Bridge, which spans the River Wye between England and Wales, is marking its 210th anniversary amid uncertainty over its future after cracks led to its closure to traffic and pedestrians. Historian John Burrows argues that the bridge, designed by John Urpeth Rastrick, deserves the same international recognition as Clifton Suspension Bridge and Tower Bridge, potentially including World Heritage status. The article highlights Rastrick's innovative response to the Wye's extreme tidal range, the bridge's elegant iron-arch design, and its importance in the development of 19th-century bridge engineering. Its historical significance was overshadowed by other major events and the rapid rise of suspension bridges, while its later name, “Old Wye Bridge,” has also diminished its profile. A large 200th-anniversary celebration in 2016 reenacted the original opening ceremony and reaffirmed the bridge's importance as a Chepstow landmark.
