‘National crisis’ warning over Warwickshire fridge collections
A shortage of specialist facilities for processing refrigerators and freezers has led Warwickshire County Council and other UK local authorities to suspend collections at recycling centres. More than 1,000 appliances are reportedly in storage across Warwickshire, including about 150 at Stratford-upon-Avon’s Burton Farm site. Officials attribute the backlog to limited national capacity, facility fires and closures, and increased breakdowns during hot weather. The Environment Agency has temporarily relaxed storage rules until April 2027, while councils warn residents to avoid rogue collectors because they may remain legally liable if appliances are fly-tipped.

Farmers praised as heroes for work to stop Stourbridge fire
Farmers and residents used tractors, cultivators and a self-propelled sprayer to create firebreaks and help contain a major blaze in Stourbridge during the UK's hottest day of the year. Nineteen houses were destroyed, more than a dozen were damaged and over 500 acres were affected. A fundraising campaign has raised more than £4,000 for nine farmers who helped, with the money intended to support fencing repairs, emergency animal feed and water, and other losses. West Midlands Fire Service is continuing to investigate the cause of the fire.

Fire services 'under pressure' as evacuated residents still not home
Eleven major fires and 43 new wildfires have placed UK fire services under severe pressure, with authorities unable to meet demand for additional firefighting appliances during the busiest period. In Stourbridge, 38 homes were destroyed or damaged and about 300 residents were evacuated; although the fire was under control, many residents were still waiting for permission and information before returning. Fires also affected Sandwell, Pershore, Stoke-on-Trent, Clun, Hampshire, South Wales and the Peak District. Staffordshire Police arrested two people on suspicion of arson, while investigators continued working to establish the cause of the Stourbridge fire. Residents described property losses, fear and frustration over delayed information, and officials urged the public not to return to restricted areas or engage in activities that could spark further fires.

'Vomit-inducing' smells from HS2 site unbearable, say residents
Residents in Coleshill and Water Orton say foul, fishy odors from HS2 construction are making daily life unbearable, causing headaches, nausea and preventing them from opening their windows during hot weather. HS2 Ltd attributes the smell to lime stabilization of excavated earth, says it is not harmful to health, and has deployed odor diffusers, mist cannons and an earth bund. MP Rachel Taylor and residents argue that these measures have not resolved the problem. The complaints add to wider concerns about property damage, air quality and disruption caused by the London-to-Birmingham route, whose wider extensions to Leeds and Manchester have been cancelled.
