The Simple Birmingham Home Test That Could Be 'Amazing' for Bladder Cancer Patients
A home urine test for suspected bladder cancer is being offered to new patients in Coventry, Leicester, parts of Wales and the West Midlands. Developed through research at the University of Birmingham and by Birmingham diagnostics company Nonacus, the test can deliver results within two weeks and has reported sensitivity of 92% and accuracy of 99.3% for ruling out cancer. Clinicians say it could reduce unnecessary invasive cystoscopies and shorten waiting lists, while trials are under way to extend its use to patients requiring regular monitoring. The test is expected to reach all West Midlands hospitals by next April, with wider NHS access being pursued.

Jailed surgeon Ian Paterson to get breaks between inquests
Coroner Judge Richard Foster has agreed in principle to give jailed surgeon Ian Paterson 10 days to prepare between giving evidence in the inquests into the deaths of 68 former patients. Paterson had requested to appear at only two inquests a month for physical and mental health reasons, while the hearings may continue until mid-2028. Families of the patients have expressed frustration at what they see as repeated concessions to Paterson. He is serving a 20-year sentence for wounding patients through botched and unnecessary operations and is due for release on licence in May 2027.

Widespread racism in Sandwell and Birmingham maternity care, review finds
A national investigation found widespread racism, discrimination and unsafe practices within maternity and neonatal services at Sandwell and West Birmingham Hospitals NHS Trust. Families and staff reported care that varied based on ethnicity, concerns being dismissed and a culture where speaking up felt unsafe. Investigators also witnessed racist behaviour among staff. Several bereaved parents described being ignored despite warning signs, while clinicians cited overwhelming workloads. The trust apologised and announced staffing increases and a zero‑tolerance policy on discrimination. The review recommended creating a national maternity and neonatal commissioner, with the government expected to introduce a national action plan.
