Alvaro Arbeloa’s 2009 departure from Liverpool to Real Madrid followed the signing of Glen Johnson, a decision that left the defender feeling undervalued despite his key role in the club’s strong 2008–09 campaign. Rafa Benitez viewed Johnson as a more attacking option and with Arbeloa entering the final year of his contract, Liverpool accepted a £3.5m offer from Madrid. Arbeloa went on to enjoy major success in Spain, while Liverpool’s defensive instability and a poor transfer window contributed to their decline the following season, ultimately leading to Benitez’s exit.
