Roundabout offers to join PM’s national homelessness campaign
South Yorkshire youth homelessness charity Roundabout has welcomed Prime Minister Andy Burnham’s pledge to ensure every rough sleeper has a place to sleep by Christmas. Chief executive Ben Keegan says the charity has made youth rough sleeping rare and brief in Sheffield and Rotherham through early intervention, family mediation, supported accommodation and rapid access to safe housing. As Roundabout approaches its 50th anniversary, he has invited Burnham and ministers to Sheffield and offered the charity’s experience to help shape and scale the national homelessness campaign.

The Star copy taker makes headlines on her 100th birthday
Feona Dixon celebrates her 100th birthday at Sheffcare's Grange Crescent Residential Care Home in Sheffield. Born in Woolwich Arsenal in 1926, she was evacuated during World War II, joined the Auxiliary Territorial Service, worked as a secretary and later became a copy taker for The Star and Telegraph. After moving to Sheffield, she raised a family, followed cricket and Sheffield United, and later worked at the University of York while volunteering with local history and veterans' organizations. Her care-home manager says Dixon remains active in the community and hopes she will enjoy receiving a centenary message from King Charles III, despite her lifelong admiration for Queen Elizabeth II.

Doctor Akash is the first over the starting line for South Yorkshire charity Lost Chord UK
Dr Akash Srinivasan, a doctor and musician who regularly cares for people living with dementia, has become the first runner to secure one of five charity places with South Yorkshire-based Lost Chord UK in the 2027 London Landmarks Half Marathon. Inspired by the charity’s use of live interactive music in care homes, hospitals, hospices and community settings, he will help raise funds for its work supporting more than 9,000 people and families each year. Lost Chord UK is seeking four additional runners for the April 4, 2027 race, with a £30 registration fee and a minimum fundraising pledge of £350.

National accolade for Heeley dementia care home
Valley Wood, a specialist dementia care home in Heeley operated by the charity Sheffcare, has received platinum status from the National Dementia Care Accreditation Scheme, the scheme’s highest rating. The award follows an earlier gold-star assessment and recognises the home’s care standards and staff dedication. Sheffcare says the knowledge and experience developed at Valley Wood will also help improve dementia care across its other homes in Sheffield.

Roundabout charity launches Rotherham healthy eating project
South Yorkshire youth homelessness charity Roundabout has received a £1,000 Social Bite grant to support vulnerable young people in Rotherham. The funding will provide two community cooking sessions per week at two accommodation sites for 11 weeks, alongside 140 food vouchers or supervised food-shop top-ups worth £10 each. The project aims to address food poverty while helping participants build budgeting, meal-planning and cooking skills, reduce isolation, and prepare for independent living.

Travel Through Time with Sheffield’s Brigantes Orchestra
Sheffield’s Brigantes Orchestra will present six concerts at Sheffield Cathedral during its 2026/27 season, themed as a musical journey through time. Games Swap events raise more than £20,000 for Roundabout charity in Sheffield

Handsworth and Hallam Theatre Company will stage a new production of Aladdin at Sheffield’s Montgomery Theatre from January 27 to 31, 2027.
