HMV has reopened in Chelmsford eight years after the chain’s collapse, launching a store in The Meadows Shopping Centre with more than 20,000 entertainment products. The return follows the company’s revival under Doug Putnam, who expanded its UK presence to over 120 locations alongside operations in Ireland, Belgium and the Netherlands. The new outlet replaces a former Next unit and reflects the brand’s broader retail resurgence.

Morrisons will close 100 stores, mainly loss‑making Morrisons Daily convenience outlets acquired through the McColl’s takeover, citing rising operational costs linked to government‑driven wage and insurance increases. Seven locations have been publicly confirmed, and consultations continue with employees at risk. The company reported slowing sales growth but noted cost‑saving progress and optimism for upcoming trading events. Despite closures, Morrisons opened 30 new franchise stores and plans further expansion as part of a long‑term turnaround strategy.
