Jockey Club quits racecourse body over fears it will continue to 'stifle change'

Controversial affordability checks on punters given green light despite industry warnings
The Gambling Commission approved new Financial Risk Assessments aimed at identifying financially vulnerable high‑spending gamblers, using credit‑agency data to reduce intrusive checks. Racing and betting organisations warn the measures will harm British racing by driving customers to the black market, cutting revenues and reducing tax receipts. Industry bodies project substantial financial losses and argue the checks will have damaging economic and societal effects. The British Horseracing Authority criticises the decision as harmful to both the sport and the wider economy, while the Commission maintains the changes will protect vulnerable consumers with minimal impact on most bettors.

Kempton Park development row as Barratt Redrow denies MP's planning application claim
Barratt Redrow rejected MP Lincoln Jopp’s claim that it intends to submit a planning application this year to redevelop Kempton Park Racecourse into 2,000 homes. Both the developer and the Jockey Club stated that no application is imminent and that the existing option agreement, which allows potential development if planning approval is obtained, remains unchanged through 2028. Jopp argued that new housing regulations near railway stations may ease previous planning barriers and reiterated his concerns about the racecourse’s future. The Jockey Club maintained that racing operations will continue while no planning process is underway.

Christophe Soumillon loses Royal Ascot appeal but has sentence cut
Christophe Soumillon’s appeal against an eight‑day suspension for his ride on Puerto Rico in the St James’s Palace Stakes was rejected, though the British Horseracing Authority panel reduced the penalty to five days. The panel found he breached Rule F46 by riding in a way that advantaged stablemate Gstaad, though it ruled there was no intent to do so. The decision followed Soumillon’s explanation that he avoided the inside rail due to concerns about ground conditions and distractions, while the panel concluded the interference warranted a lesser sanction without evidence of deliberate assistance.
