Teleconsultation Support for Obstetric Emergencies During the COVID-19 Pandemic in Rural Nepal: Results and Lessons Learned From a Mixed-Methods Study

Global Health: Science and Practice 31 Ara 2025 English

A teleconsultation helpline launched in rural Nepal during the COVID-19 pandemic connected primary health care providers with clinical experts to support obstetric and neonatal emergencies. Analysis of 429 consultations across 551 facilities showed that real-time expert guidance improved clinical decision-making, enabled some emergencies to be managed locally, and facilitated more efficient referrals. Interviews identified increased provider confidence and improved referral coordination as key benefits, while lack of essential drugs, inconsistent expert availability, and connectivity issues were key challenges. The program demonstrated value particularly in remote areas with limited referral options and was recommended for scale-up with stronger expert incentives, improved supply chains, and integration of video consultations.

Global Health: Science and Practice 20 Ara 2024 English

The Informed Health Choices (IHC) intervention in Uganda aimed to enhance secondary school students' critical thinking about health claims. The process evaluation revealed that the intervention was well-received by students, teachers, and policymakers, who recognized its importance in navigating health information. Despite challenges such as time constraints and the intervention not being part of the national curriculum, the program improved students' critical thinking skills and interest in science-related subjects. Process Evaluation of Teaching Critical Thinking About Health Using the Informed Health Choices Intervention in Rwanda: A Mixed Methods Study

Global Health: Science and Practice 20 Ara 2024 English

The study evaluates the implementation and impact of the Informed Health Choices (IHC) secondary school intervention in Rwanda, aimed at teaching critical thinking about health claims. The intervention, which includes digital resources and teacher training, was implemented in lower secondary schools across Rwanda. The process evaluation found that teacher training was crucial, with some students successfully applying the concepts learned to health and non-health decisions. However, challenges such as time constraints and language barriers were noted. The intervention's compatibility with the curriculum and its digital nature were seen as factors that could facilitate its scale-up. The study suggests that integrating the lessons into the curriculum could enhance sustainability and scalability, although the already packed curriculum poses a challenge.

GDP is important but we must go beyond Ggoobi’s thesis

Daily Monitor 20 Şub 2024 English

Michael Buteera Mugisha critiques Mr Ggoobi's view on the importance of GDP, arguing that it offers an uncritical and one-sided explanation. He points out the discrepancy between Uganda's GDP growth and rising poverty levels, questioning the assumption that GDP growth equates to increased happiness and prosperity for all. Mugisha suggests that a good thesis should account for the variation in GDP structure and its different impacts on society, and that economists should integrate political economy and sociological insights to better understand GDP growth variations.

More and more debt: Welcome the new normal

Monitor 8 Oca 2024 English

The article discusses Uganda's significant national debt, which stands at $23 billion, nearly half the size of the country's economy. It criticizes the current economic management under Mr. Ramathan Ggoobi, noting the approval of supplementary budgets without funds and subsequent borrowing. The stagnation of Uganda's tax revenue at 13% of GDP for over a decade is highlighted, alongside the Uganda Revenue Authority's (URA) high tax rates at low income levels. The article also points out the persistent current account deficit and the failure of economic policies to transform the economy, leading to limited opportunities for workers and investors. It mentions Uganda's high entrepreneurial activity but notes it is driven by survival rather than innovation. The decline in agriculture productivity and marginal growth in manufacturing are seen as indicators of the failure of the economic model promoted by the Bank of Uganda, Ministry of Finance, and international advisors. The article calls for a rethinking of this model, focusing on growing exports, production, and productivity.

Efficacy of Single-Dose Praziquantel for the Treatment of Schistosoma mansoni Infections among School Children in Rwanda

Mdpi 15 Eyl 2023 English

The article discusses the public health challenge of schistosomiasis, particularly in Sub-Saharan Africa where over 90% of the global burden exists. It highlights the socioeconomic impacts of the disease, which predominantly affects school-aged children, leading to various health issues including growth retardation and cognitive impairment. The World Health Assembly has endorsed mass drug administration (MDA) with praziquantel (PZQ) and albendazole to combat this. Despite MDAs in Rwanda, high prevalence rates persist, raising concerns about PZQ efficacy and potential drug resistance. The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends regular monitoring of drug efficacy, especially after several rounds of MDA. The article emphasizes the importance of continued vigilance in monitoring drug resistance to ensure the effectiveness of schistosomiasis control programs.
