West Sussex residents fight to stop village becoming 'sprawling town'
Residents of Ashington, West Sussex, are opposing Horsham District Council’s proposal to allocate land for 450 additional homes on the village’s northern edge. Combined with already approved and developing schemes, the proposal could bring the total potential increase to 750 homes, nearly 70% more than the village’s current housing stock. Residents, led by Patricia O’Callaghan, fear the development would alter Ashington’s character and worsen traffic, transport, healthcare access and infrastructure pressures. A consultation on the Horsham District Local Plan closes on August 24.

Calls for Sussex to Focus on Solar Energy Amid Recent Hot Weather
A prolonged period of hot weather has prompted calls for Sussex to accelerate its focus on solar and other renewable energy. Greater Brighton Economic Board chair Caroline Baxter said the Solar Across Sussex initiative could reduce energy bills and price volatility, improve energy security, address climate change, attract investment and create jobs. The region aims to become energy neutral by 2040, while renewable-energy installations reportedly rose by about 27% between 2024 and 2025; Baxter called for this growth to be sustained and accelerated.

Plans for 400 Homes in Ford Facing Refusal Over Drainage
Arun District Council planning officers have recommended refusing an outline application for 400 homes, a secondary school and a community hub on land south of Ford Lane near Arundel. Although highways objections have been withdrawn and the school land transfer is expected to proceed, drainage and flood risk concerns remain unresolved. Officials say the proposal’s infiltration-based drainage strategy is supported by inadequate testing conducted at inappropriate depths and during summer conditions, leaving the site fundamentally deficient and potentially increasing flood risk elsewhere. Councillors are due to make a final decision on August 26.

E-bike confiscations in Sussex rise by over 300 per cent
Sussex Police seized 145 e-bikes in 2025, up from 36 in 2024, representing a 303 per cent annual increase. The figures were obtained by the Press Association through Freedom of Information requests to police forces across the UK. Police attribute seizures to collisions, drink- and drug-driving checks, suspected criminal activity, antisocial behaviour and proactive enforcement operations. Recent patrols in Crawley, Lewes and Newhaven led to multiple electric vehicles being seized, arrests and traffic offences. Police warned that privately owned e-bikes and e-scooters cannot be ridden in public unless they meet legal requirements or are used through an authorised rental scheme.

Fears over proposed commercial building in Sussex hamlet
A proposal to build a 1,080-square-metre commercial building on a disused tennis court at West Barn in Norton, near Chichester, has attracted more than 50 objections. Residents say the hamlet's narrow lane cannot handle construction traffic and HGVs, and fear the building's scale and height would damage nearby homes, light and property values. Arun District Council planning officers recommend approval, while West Sussex County Council Highways has raised no objection, saying access is safe and the expected traffic increase can be accommodated. A final decision is due on August 26.

Sussex Police increased its presence and contacted parents after clashes involving around 200 youths, while Brighton & Hove City Council says it is working with police, health services and youth teams to prevent harm. Campaigners also link the gatherings to substantial beach litter, including cans, bottles and single-use plastics.

Major expansion of Sidlesham traveller site blocked
A planning inspector has rejected plans to expand the Gypsy and Traveller site at Melita Nursery on Chalk Lane, Sidlesham, from nine lawful pitches to 22. The decision followed evidence that 44 to 46 static caravans were already being used on the site without permission. Inspector R C Kirby agreed with Chichester District Council that the proposed layout would be overcrowded, provide inadequate living conditions and lack sufficient space for amenities. Concerns about drainage and potential harm to protected species, particularly bats, also outweighed the district’s urgent need for more Traveller pitches. The council will consider the decision alongside ongoing enforcement action, while it must pay partial costs linked to a delay in publishing an inquiry notice.
