200,000 People Flee Wildfires in France and Spain as Some Leave by Boat
Wildfires in south-western France and central Spain forced an estimated 200,000 people to evacuate, including about 141,000 in France and 60,000 in Spain. In the Gironde and Landes regions, flames destroyed homes and a campsite, injured dozens of firefighters and prompted some 1,500 people to escape by boat, while the main blaze moved toward Bordeaux. Spain declared a national wildfire emergency as fires near Madrid and in Avila consumed large areas, with further evacuations possible. Heatwave conditions, high winds and dry, overgrown rural areas hampered firefighting. France and Spain requested European assistance, receiving or arranging additional water-bombing aircraft and helicopters; no deaths were reported in the fires covered, although Spain had recorded a deadly blaze earlier in the month.

Firefighters in central Spain battle huge wildfire during heatwave
A massive wildfire in Guadalajara has burned over 32,000 hectares, triggered evacuations in more than 30 villages, and occurred amid a severe heatwave affecting much of Spain. Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez linked the escalating fire conditions to climate change and urged a national political pact to address it. Officials reported no deaths and credited firefighters for protecting homes, while extreme temperatures and dry conditions continued to heighten wildfire risks across the country. Scientists noted that Europe’s rapid warming trend is increasing the frequency and intensity of such events.
