Camden Man’s Enfield Pool Abuse Acknowledged 50 Years On
A Camden man known as Jay says he was sexually assaulted as a child at the former Edmonton Leisure Centre in the 1970s while he was in care. He reported the assault to police in 2024, but the investigation did not identify the alleged offender. After his Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority claim was initially rejected because of the time limit, solicitor Samantha Burnard of Irwin Mitchell successfully appealed to a tribunal, which acknowledged that Jay had been the victim of a crime. His claim has been returned to the authority for medical evidence and assessment of possible compensation. Jay says the decision vindicated him and highlighted the failures of the care system, while Burnard called for reform of the compensation scheme.
