Teen’s success story as he becomes Centrepoint’s Student of the Year
Samsom, an unaccompanied asylum-seeking teenager from Eritrea, rebuilt his life in the UK with Centrepoint’s support and was named his college’s Student of the Year before receiving a Centrepoint Educational Excellence Award. The charity also reports worsening food poverty among homeless young people, issuing 314 emergency food vouchers in the first three months of 2026 compared with 1,095 throughout the previous year. Another Centrepoint resident, Josh, describes overcoming hidden barriers to employment after applying for hundreds of jobs and securing a barista placement that could help him move into independent housing. Centrepoint is also working with the cardfactory Foundation to provide sensory boxes designed to make support and educational environments more accessible.

400,000 A&E Visits for Minor Eye Conditions Could Be Avoided
Up to 400,000 annual eye-related emergency-department visits in England could reportedly be managed by trained community optometrists, according to Association of Optometrists analysis. Minor conditions including conjunctivitis, dry eye, infections and some abrasions contribute to nearly 780,000 eye-related A&E visits each year. The Association of Optometrists and the Royal College of Emergency Medicine say expanded, consistently funded community services could reduce pressure on hospitals and provide care closer to home. Access currently varies across England, creating a postcode lottery, and eye-care leaders are urging the government to establish a standardised nationwide service.
