Shop price inflation slows in major boost for British households - but there’s a ‘catch’
UK shop price inflation fell to 0.9% year on year in July from 1.2% in June, while non-food inflation declined to 0.2% and food inflation eased to 2.2%. Fresh food inflation rose to 3.1%, however. Retail promotions, including discounts on snacks, alcoholic drinks, clothing and footwear, helped contain prices, while electrical, health and beauty products became more expensive. The British Retail Consortium and NielsenIQ warned that higher employment costs, packaging taxes, global instability, climate disruption, chip prices and manufacturing costs could create further pressure on retailers and households.
