Former NHS offices in Sheffield will become housing
Sheffield City Council approved plans for 67 homes on the fire-damaged former NHS headquarters site at Fulwood, including restoring Fulwood House and demolishing surrounding buildings such as an eight‑storey office block. The redevelopment will include new flats, houses, underground parking, leisure facilities, and enhanced green space. Despite objections over parking and safety, planning officers noted local acceptance of the need for redevelopment, and the NHS stated that proceeds from future sales will support health services.

No blank cheque for Doncaster Sheffield Airport reopening, says mayor
South Yorkshire Mayor Oliver Coppard said taxpayer money will be safeguarded in efforts to reopen Doncaster Sheffield Airport, stressing there will be no unrestricted public funding. Lease negotiations with landowner Peel Group continue, with turnover rent terms still under discussion, though most elements have been agreed. The airport is expected to reopen next spring, and ongoing site work has not stopped. Worker protections were also raised, with assurances that equality considerations are included in procurement and that airport operators share these values.

Sheffield Council reduces cost of SEND transport to school
Sheffield Council reduced the cost of transporting children with special educational needs and disabilities by cutting single‑passenger taxi routes, expanding shared journeys and increasing its own transport fleet. Greater use of independent travel training and personal travel budgets also lowered projected overspend from £7m to £1.4m, with expectations of breaking even this year. Officials reported rising participation in travel training, while councillors noted visible improvements in transport efficiency. Parents of post‑16 students contribute to travel costs, with concessions and financial support options available.

Sheffield City Council to resume flag removals after staff abuse
Sheffield City Council will restart removing unauthorised flags from lamp-posts after previously pausing the practice due to staff being abused during removals. The council plans to prioritise taking down items posing safety risks, containing offensive content or deteriorating into hazards, while national flags such as the St George’s Cross are not considered offensive. A resident raised concerns that prominent displays of the Union Jack could create community division, but the council reiterated that attaching items to public infrastructure without permission is illegal. A defined set of criteria is used to identify offensive material, which is removed within 24 hours.

Campaigners call for end to Sheffield greenbelt plans
Campaigners are urging Sheffield City Council to abandon plans to allocate 14 greenbelt sites for housing and industrial development after government instructions to expand the draft Local Plan. Protesters argue that community input has been ignored and that questions about fully exhausting brownfield options remain unresolved. Council leader Fran Belbin said evidence shows significant potential for development on urban brownfield sites but not all meet planning tests. Public consultation on the proposed modifications has closed, and the plan could be implemented in autumn pending inspector approval.
