Ken Bates obituary
Ken Bates, former owner and chairman of Chelsea FC, has died at 94. Known for his combative style and controversial decisions, he bought Chelsea for £1 in 1982 and later sold it to Roman Abramovich while retaining a personal profit. His tenure included frequent managerial changes, public feuds, the construction of an infamous electric fence, and battles to secure Stamford Bridge from developers. Despite controversy, he oversaw major commercial development and helped return Chelsea to the top tier. After leaving Chelsea, he bought and later sold Leeds United, again amid disputes. Raised in modest circumstances, he became a self‑made millionaire with business interests beyond football. He is survived by his wife, three daughters and two sons.
