Exploring the Former Cholera Hospital on Flat Holm
Karl-James Langford reflects on Flat Holm’s deteriorating former cholera hospital, recalling childhood and restoration visits to the island and the late Peter Sampson’s contributions. Built in 1896 as a 12-bed isolation facility for sailors arriving through South Wales ports, the hospital included two wards, an administration block, heating chimneys and a separate wooden crematorium. It later closed in 1935 and was partly converted into a cinema for military personnel. Despite earlier plans to restore its roof, its Grade II listing, extensive deterioration and the likely cost and regulatory requirements now make rehabilitation difficult.

Exploring the History of the Staiths in Barry Dock
The surviving staith arches at Barry Dock are remnants of the hydraulic coal-hoist system that loaded coal from South Wales into ships. Built for Barry Dock number one before its 1889 opening, the structures used stone and bricks from across South Wales and Staffordshire. Barry became the world’s leading coal-exporting port in 1913, but the staiths declined after the mid-20th century as coal traffic fell, hoists were demolished or replaced, and parts of the dock were reclaimed. The remaining arches preserve evidence of Barry’s industrial and architectural heritage.
